We believe that local people – all sections of the community – can benefit themselves and the environment by helping to build a sustainable future for Durham City. Previous generations have created an environment that is unique and wonderful in many ways. Our generation can protect and improve this legacy, passing on an even better Durham City to future generations. Our vision is the creation of a sustainable community in Durham City. This involves taking action to sustain and improve the natural and built environment while also meeting community needs and strengthening the local economy.EnvironmentWe want to encourage biodiversity , to help create a healthy and varied natural environment. The distinctiveness of our both our urban and rural environments needs to be protected and improved. We aim to help protect natural resources, by encouraging greater efficiency and increased use of renewable resources. Waste and pollution needs to be managed in order to minimise the effects on health and the environment.
Local economyGoods and services provided by local suppliers need to be given a higher profile and a higher priority in purchasing decisions. We support the growth of local economies in sustainable goods and services such as public transport, farmers’ markets, and alternative energy. We believe that putting our vision into practice will make Durham City an even more attractive place to visit, study, worship, live, and work. Community needsA sustainable community involves people working together in order to improve the quality of life for themselves and for others. The needs of all sections of the community need to be considered in order to create an overall balance. It is important, for example, to ensure that families are not excluded from residential areas that have become popular among students. A sustainable community is also a healthy community which promotes mutual respect, support, co-operation, friendship, and healthy lifestyles. It is also part of creating a safer community in which dangers from traffic and crime are much reduced, and a cleaner community, where people are much less likely to litter the streets and spoil the countryside.
